What is Disciple Making?

“Go and make disciples of all nations…” Matthew 28:19 (NIV)
“Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near…” Matthew 28:19 (MSG)

A question I have been pondering lately is What is disciple making?

I recently read “WickiChurch” by Steve Murrell, Pastor of Victory Church in Manilla, Philippines. Pastor Murrell challenges the reader to “compassionately engage your community, intentionally establish biblical foundations, strategically equip believers, and constantly empower disciples.”

Engaging, empowering, encouraging, and equipping are some of my weakest qualities. I find myself very challenged to be a source of encouragement for those around me and I need to be very intentional as I walk with those I meet.

It seems that I have been extremely busy with the “administration” of The Shepherd’s House  and not very active in the “program”.  We have several active projects including a kitchen remodel; a potential women’s and children’s facility; and fundraising activities.

Previously, I have not been a discipleship partner with any of the residents at The Shepherd’s House, but I now have the opportunity to interact with Murv who is a dynamic individual and hard to keep up with at times. He spends most of his free time at a pottery shop in town and throws some great mugs, bowls and vases. He has also recently taken on the task of helping his 25 year old son, who he hasn’t seen for over 15 years, establish a community garden in Bend. I ask myself, what does is look like to be a disciple maker with Murv who has not accepted Christ as his savior yet.  Please pray for Murv and pray for me that I might be a friend and an encouragement to him.
