The Pain of Others

“In 1966 my husband was critically injured in an automobile accident…
In 1968 our son Steve was killed in Vietnam…
In 1973 our son Tim was killed by a drunken driver in a horrible head-on collision…
In 1975 I discovered that our son, Larry, age 20, was a practicing homosexual…
...So often I just wanted to die, or to go to sleep and never wake up.”
Fresh Elastic for Stretched out Moms - Barbara Johnson

THE PAIN OF OTHERS

As Sally spoke of how her family has stopped going to church and no longer seeks after God, the pain of a family spinning out of control seems unbearable.

As Rachel talks of the steroid treatment that didn’t provide any answers and the doctors continue to look for the deceptive crippling disease, life can be extremely painful with migraine headaches, excruciatingly painful joints, and little desire to get out of bed on many days.

Peter thought just one drink would calm the voices in his head, but at the end of a 5 day drinking binge, he found himself in the detox center of the hospital and under psychiatric watch after his failed suicide attempt.

These stories and more continue to be common threads in our lives today.

Hard to read?  Sometimes.

Depressing? Yes, they can be.

Real lives in real pain? Absolutely.

“Grace is nothing more nor less than the face that love wears when it meets imperfection, weakness, failure, sin.” Free for the Taking - Joseph P. Cooke

But he said to me,

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”  - 2 Corinthians 12:9

FEBRUARY

GNI Live 2014
Feb 2 – 6, GNI (Curt, Cash and Brian) lead a training conference in Portland with over 65 attendees from 7 different rescue missions from as far away as Pennsylvania represented.

On Tuesday night of the conference, my family joined me in Portland where we all were able to attend The Piano Guys concert as a Christmas gift from my parents.  We were able to get front row seats and it was an incredible concert.

The 4 days concluded with a 6 1/2 hour drive home (usually only takes 3 hours) on the front side of our biggest storm of the year dumping close to 3 feet of snow in 48 hours.

The National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA)
This was a 4 day event in Spokane, WA where Jarod (14) competed with some friends in a speech competition.  In his category, Duo Interpretation, there were 24 teams competing, and Jarod and his partner received 3 place.  It was a great first time event for everyone.

Women’s and Children’s Facility
At The Shepherd’s House, we are actively pursuing and are currently in contract to purchase an old church in Bend for a Christ-centered women’s and children’s facility.  We have a lot of work to do to make this project happen and would appreciate your prayers as we walk through the feasibility and potential purchase of the property.
